The Humane Slaughter Association (HSA) is concerned to read of the plans for the world’s first commercial octopus farm, based in the Canary Islands.
Whilst there are a number of animal welfare concerns surrounding commercial octopus farming, the HSA is exclusively concerned with animal welfare during transport, slaughter and killing.

The Humane Slaughter Association (HSA) welcomes the recent government announcement that funding will be made available to the small abattoir sector. The funding will be used for improved infrastructure to promote animal health and welfare, productivity, sustainability and food provenance. The HSA looks forward to seeing further details of the funding when they are available.

The Humane Slaughter Association (HSA) has updated its technical guidance on Instantaneous Mechanical Destruction (IMD) for the killing of chicks in hatcheries.
The updated guidance explains the legal and welfare requirements of using IMD to kill day-old chicks, focusing on two designs of equipment commonly used in the UK. Although focusing on these two designs, the guidance does not exclude the use of other designs of IMD.
