Investigating the welfare of fish during transport and slaughter in the Kampala Metropolitan region (Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso)

Year: 2025

Namara Delilah Diana
Wakiso, Uganda

Research Grant: £5,895

This project aims to investigate fish welfare during transport and slaughter in Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso, Uganda’s primary aquaculture production areas. It identifies critical gaps in fish welfare during transportation and slaughter by assessing water quality, stakeholder attitudes and current transport and slaughter methods.

Using a mixed-methods approach, the study will collect observational, physicochemical and survey data to identify welfare risks and inform practical, evidence-based improvements. The findings will support policy development, stakeholder training and the creation of national guidelines aligned with international standards, ultimately enhancing fish welfare, promoting sustainable and ethical aquaculture practices in Uganda.
