HSA Funding Frequently Asked Questions

The HSA supports activities which will improve the welfare of (or allow us to better understand welfare challenges to) livestock animals during marketing, transport, slaughter or emergency killing. For example, grants could be used to cover research costs; training; organisation of scientific or technical meetings; travel expenses to present research at scientific conferences, or the costs to undertake a research or study visit.  

Please ensure that animal welfare  is the main focus of the research project. We do not support projects in which the main focus is a non-welfare parameter, for example, animal production, or the improvement of meat quality. The animal welfare benefits must be stated very clearly.

If your project is not specifically focused on animal welfare during transport, at markets, or during slaughter or emergency killing, then please consider applying for a  grant from our sister charity, the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW) instead. UFAW supports a wide variety of projects across all animal species. 

We can support work on any species farmed for food and other animal products, this includes farmed fish and other aquatic species. 

Applicants based anywhere in the world are eligible to apply (please note that sometimes for reasons beyond our control, such as international sanctions, the HSA may not be able to make certain awards). Applications can come from academics, students, trainees, those working in the industry, or anyone else who can carry out a project which will improve or help better understand the welfare of animals “beyond the farm gate” – during transport and marketing or when undergoing slaughter or emergency killing.
