Ovejas y cabras

Para un desangrado rápido, se recomienda practicar la inserción en las ovejas y cabras cerca del corazón de un modo similar a los cerdos (Figura 20, posición 1). Como alternativa, se puede realizar la inserción haciendo un corte profundo transversal por la garganta cerca de la cabeza (Figura 20, posición 2) para cortar los cuatro principales vasos sanguíneos del cuello (Figura 21). Esto solo es aceptable en ovejas y cabras porque no hay suministro directo de sangre desde la arteria vertebral hasta el cerebro.

Se debería desangrar a los animales lo antes posible tras el aturdimiento, idealmente durante la fase tónica. En esta fase es cuerpo está rígido, haciendo que la incisión sea más fácil y más segura. Cuando se aplique un corte transversal en la garganta, es esencial que se corten eficazmente ambas arterias carótidas y ambas venas yugulares.
