Humane Slaughter Association

Welfare of livestock during transport

The HSA maintains that animals should be slaughtered as close to the point of production as possible. Historical activities included pressing for a ban on live transport of animals destined for consumption. The association collaborates and supports research on transport equipment, journey times, and drive quality on welfare of all farmed animal species. Interests include transport during disease outbreaks.

The Association also helps in education and training by organising fora for exchange of ideas on the best practice on live animal transport. Reports from HSA workshops and conferences on animal transport are available as free downloads on the information section of this website. Further information is available in the publications section.

HSA publications include the award wining training package 'The Road Ahead' which has become an industry standard in training drivers on the welfare of animals during transport. This package includes a video/ CD-Rom and a pocket reference book. The package may be obtained via our publications section.
