Animal welfare training
The HSA provides relevant training for stockmen involved with handling animals during transport, in markets and for slaughter. Training may be arranged for part of the requirement for Slaughter Licenses. We also offer training for Animal Welfare Officers for poultry, pigs, fish and red meat animals. HSA courses include a theoretical as well as a practical component.
We provide training for establishments of all sizes, ranging from large to small-scale and hobby farmers, slaughtermen and university students. The HSA uses proven training material based on the latest science and legislative requirements. The courses are run by licensed slaughtermen, who have both theoretical and practical knowledge on animal slaughter. Contact the HSA to discuss your particular training needs.

Advice on animal welfare
The HSA is happy to receive enquiries on any animal welfare matters from those within the livestock transport, marketing and meat processing industries. If you need advice on a particular matter or would like to discuss something relevant to your facility, please call us on +44 (0)1582 831919 or email info@hsa.org.uk and we will do our best to assist.
More formally, the HSA can also provide a welfare assessment service to slaughterhouses and livestock markets, either at the request of the slaughterhouse/market or at the request of a retailer, along with the slaughterhouse or market’s agreement. Assessments can be provided of some or all live animal areas of the processing plant or livestock market, along with suggestions for improvement where necessary. The HSA's interests include red meat, poultry, fish and other farmed species. Please click on the link to view the HSA’s welfare assessment policy.
